Background

Juan Cienfuegos builds tools for emergencies. Through Everything Tactical and Triage Lights, he set out to give people in danger, and the responders who help them, a faster way to share where help is needed. Visual 911+ lets a person send their exact location and a request for help to responders, and Disaster ID is its companion app in the same public safety family. These are not apps that can afford to fail, because someone may be relying on one in the middle of a real emergency.

The challenge

Public safety software is held to a higher standard than most. The apps have to capture and deliver accurate location data, protect sensitive information, and keep working through years of phone, operating system, and app store changes without ever leaving a user stranded. They also have to meet the requirements of FirstNet, the dedicated broadband network for first responders, which means passing formal technical review and testing. Doing all of that once is hard. Doing it continuously for nearly a decade, across two apps and three app stores, is the real challenge.

What we built and maintain

OgreLogic has been the single team behind these apps since the beginning, handling everything from the code to the certifications to the infrastructure:

  • Visual 911+, on iOS and Android. The app sends a person's GPS location and a help request to responders through email and SMS, plots it on a map including National Grid coordinates, and encrypts sensitive location data, with an SMS delivery backend behind it.
  • Disaster ID, published across the Apple App Store, Google Play, and the Amazon Appstore as a companion public safety app.
  • FirstNet certification. We took both apps through FirstNet's technical review and testing, answering its requirements on availability and deployment, and keep them certified for the network first responders use.
  • Nine years of platform and store maintenance. iOS and Android version updates, modernizing the codebase as the platforms evolved, location and dependency updates, distribution certificate renewals, and continuous Apple, Google, and Amazon review and policy compliance.
  • Everything around the apps. We also built and maintain the Everything Tactical and Triage Lights websites, managed hosting and email across providers, and ran search and local listing work for the brands.

The result

For more than nine years OgreLogic has kept Visual 911+ and Disaster ID live, certified, and current. Both apps run on the major app stores, both stay certified for FirstNet, and the client returns for every update, certification cycle, and renewal. In a field where the software has to work when it matters most, a partnership that has lasted nearly a decade is the clearest endorsement there is.
